II. Lembata Regency At Glance.
Formerly Lembata was known as Lomblen or Kawula. It is one of 16 Regencies in East Nusa Tenggara Province in Indonesia. The capital city is Lewoleba town. Lembata is an island Regency in east of Flores island. The island is bordered with :
~ North : Flores Sea.
~ South : Savu Sea.
~ East : Marica Strait.
The width the Regency is 4.620.285 km². It consist of the width of the land is 1.266.390 km² and the width of the ocean is 3.353.895 km².
Administratively, Lembata is divided into 9 sub districts such as: Ile Ape sub district, East Ile Ape, Lebatukan, Atadei, Nubatukan, Omesuri, Buyasuri, Nagawutung, and the last are Wulandoni. It has 137 Village and 7 Kelurahan (bigger than a Village). The people of Lembata divided into the native, inhabitants and the outsiders. The native in habitants consists of two ethnic, Lamaholot ethnic group and Kedang. The majority people is Lamaholot athnic group spread around 7 sub-districts namely, Ile Ape, East Ile Ape, Nubatukan, Atadei, Nagawutung, Wuladoni and Lebatukan. Sub-district, while Kedang ethnic in two other sub-district Omesuri and Buyasuri sub-district. The person of each ethnic peaking with their own native language and Indonesian language is the official language. Based on population registration on April 2010, showed that total population of Lembata Regency was 124.397 peoples.
Topographically, Lembata regency consists of coastal area, mountainous and volcanoes areas with its highest volcanoes peak on 1.319 meters on the sea levels of IIe Ape, in the east of Lewoleba town.
Lembata has tropical climate. It has two seasons dry and rainy season. Dry season occurs between April or May to October or November, while rainy season occurs between November or December to March or April.
The temperature at maximum is 30ºC – 33ºC.
The temperature at minimum is 20ºC – 24ºC.
The average of wind speed is 8.41 knot.
The humidity of wind is 72% – 84%.
The majority of Lembatanese is Roman Catholic. Moslem, Protestants, Hinduism, Buddhism, and other are the rest. They live in good understanding, love one another. In one side, they converted to those modern religions, but in other side, culturally, they still believe in animist and dynamist. From cultural side Lembatanese puts their believing in the highest power as the creator of the world (Lera Wulan Tana Ekan), Trancendent God, Imanent God.

PLACES OF INTEREST
A. WAIJARANG BEACH
It is in Waijarang village. It can be reached by car/motor bike, for about 10 km away from Lewoleba town. It is a beautiful Natural white sandy beach sourounded by tropical trees and supported by natural beauty of sunset at Waijarang hill top. The visitors may enjoy for sun bathing, swimming, relax, picnic, camping, and soft trecking to Waijarang hill for admiring nice view and sunset in mount Boleng, using boat to view the panorama. It has a great variety of marine life suitable for diving to explore beautifull coral garden, amazing array of marine life.
B. AWELOLONG ISLAND
There is a beautifull and empty white sandy island at northen part of Lewoleba town. The island is special for it occasional appearance when low tide and we find many kind of shells. Visitors many enjoy for fishing, bathing, sun bathing, sailing to view the panorama of Lewoleba bay and diving to explore the coral garden and marine life. It can be reached by motor boat for about 20 minite from Kampung Bajo in Rayuan Kelapa – Lewoleba town.
C. SABUTOBO HOT SPRING
Sabutobo Hot Spring surrounded by tropic forest with the river flow exists inside. The river flow ends at Sabutobo. 200 m at leftside of street, visitors may obtain to see the hoot spring coming out from the bank. Not far, there is also hot spring spraying through the stems of woods. Sabutobo hot spring is balmy and cool even able to kill down our thirsty need. Visitors will be accompanied by birds singing while enjoy tropical jungles fresh air. It is located in Ile Boli Village 20 km away from Lewoleba town and stopping place to Lamalera Village.
D. LODOVAVO WATER FALL
It’s located in Atawai Village 42 km away from Lewoleba. On the way from Atawai Village visitors may explore tropical jungles for walking down to waterfall by soft tracking. It has 30 m high of amazing waterfall which covered by tropical trees and the river flow down inside to natural pool below. Really cool place for recreation, bathing, swimming which accompanied by birds singing. Visitors will find also wild life others animals.
E. HOT SPRING OF WAIKEANTING BOTO
Hot spring of Waikenating is located in Labalimut/Boto Village. It will be reached by car or public transport for about 39 km or 2 hours from Lewoleba town. For about 10 minutes walking down from Boto Village throughout coffee plantation the visitors can find the hot spring which surrounded by tropic forest fresh air and coming out from the ground. Local peoples are used for bathing, washing. Visitors can enjoy natural of tropic forest air, and explore to the jungle for admining wild animal such as bird watching. It is stopping place to Atawuwur waterfall and Lamalera Village.
F. TRADITIONAL WHALE HUNTING IN LAMALERA VILLAGE
This whaling village (47 km away from Lewoleba town) on south coast of Lembata still hunts whales using small boats (pledang baoth), with the aded it drama of a harpooner who leaps from the baot in to the beach of the whale and plungs his harpoon deep in to the victime flesh. Most of those caught are sperm whales though occasionally smaller pilot whales are scace sharkes, mantarays and dolphins. The villagers of Lamalera mainly use harpoons for fishing, whaling boats are made entirely of wood, wooden pegs are used instead of nails. The sail made of palm leaves. Before whaling season from 2 May until the end of September, it must be opened with some stage of rites. The first is Tobu Nama Fata Ceremony (ceremony of Lamalera people are gathering together for public dialogue, starting with the evaluation of the fishing activity that of years ago until needed preparations for the year around fishing and over this ceremony, the mutually apologize each other. They believe when they don’t to totally appologize each other. It will damage the sailing activity especially the moment of whale hunting. It’s held at Saint Peter Chapel in boat houses at Lamalera beach.
G. TRADITIONAL TRADE OF BARTER SYSTEM IN WULANDONI VILLAGE
It is located in Wulandoni Village for about 48 km from Lewoleba town or 30 menutes from Lamalera Village. Traditional trade of Bartersytem, local mother tongue known as Du Gelu Eti, rules the daily routines of the local people. In Wulandoni village through barter – market, these people comprehend the meaning of sharing. Those living from the sea need daily foods such as corn, bean, vegetables, rice etc. The opposite counter part need meat of fish especially whale meat, etc. They barter each other. The visitor may enjoy of traditional trade of barter system for buying something likes banana, etc. Traditional barter system is hapened every Saturday a week.
H. NATURAL RESOURCES OF GAS IN KARUN WATUWAWER
40 km away from Lewoleba town, visitor can find natural resources of gas in Karun Watuwawer. Local peoples are used these small holles gasseus for cooking any kind of meal, such as peanut, cassava only 1 or 2 hours than they will take and directly to consume it.
Ahar traditional ceremony can be found in this village. The main Purpose is to dedicate fisrt – born child from marriage couple to be the tribe of his parents. The interesting thing is the mother of this child is a void to eat food until the end of the ceremony. They held at their own customary house on Juni until August. Local dances and songs are presented. The piligrim tour can also do there by visiting the grave of the Father Conrard Beker, SVD. He was a Catholic Missionary from Holland.
I. LUSILAME VILLAGE
It’s 46 kilometters away from Lewoleba town. The visitors will surprise with nice view at Atawolo hill top to Labala bay. On March – April every year local people celebrate traditional ceremony for eating young corn (tunukwar) in Lewogolen traditional village, especially in their customary houses. Local dances and songs are presented.
J. EPO BEACH (Eco Tourism of Ohe Beach)
It’s located at Kolontobo Village, 12 kilometers away from Lewoleba town. It is a natural white sand beach surrounded by coconut trees and mangroves. It is suitable for swimming, sun bathing, rilex and diving to explore the marine life.
K. ANCIENT VILLAGE OF ATAWATUNG
It is located in slope of Ile Ape volcanoe in Lamagute village, 26 kilometers away from Lewoleba town. The ancient village is surrounded by cusstomary houses. In July every year, the local people gathering together to celebrate the utan wuunlolon/ bean party. Prior to the bean party, the local people hang chicks as symbol to tell the whole people be aware. They pay special attention to correct themselves, knowing their own personal mistakes to each other then preparing ample heart to forgive each other. Bean party is acompained by traditional dances. From Atawatung, visitor can climb to the highest peak of ile Ape and crater in the dark and catch the magnificent sight of the red sky when it appears during the sun light and beautiful sun rise from the top. L. ANCIENT VILLAGE OF LEWOHALA
It is located in Jontona Village and it is a neighbouring village from Atawatung village; 27 km away from Lewoleba town. It is located in the slope of Ile ApeVolcano. On September/October every year, local people celebrate Bean Party in their own customary house of clan and koke (special place of the banquet).They put the griiled chicken, banana, rice, and fish in this place. They hang the chicks in their house which as a symbol to be aware and to correct themselves, knowing their own mistakes and preparing ample heart to forgive each other. Local dances and songs are presented. From Jontona, You can climb highest peak of Ile Ape (1.500 m above sea levels) for catch the magnificent sight of the red sky when it appears during the sun light and beautiful sun rise from the top.
M. BIHU SIA (TRADITIONAL SALT EVAPORATION)
You can find salt evaporation process in Watodiri village. It’s 12 km away from Lewoleba town. The evaporation processing is started by taking the soil that containing salt, than filter it to separate the water from the soil than cooked it traditionally to be salt.
N. MINGAR WHITE SAND BEACH
It is located in Pasir Putih Village, 36 kilometers away from Lewoleba town. Realy wonderfull with natural white sand beach for swimming, sun bathing, relax, jogging. The nautical point break always comes to surfing activites. It is 2 until 3 meters at the wet season and 1.5 until 2.5 meters at the dry season. The beach is also for catching Nale (a kind of sea worms) when full moonlight grow up on February or March.
O. LEWOLEIN BEACH
It’s 27 kilometers away from Lewoleba town, visitor can find Lewolein Beach at Dikesare Village. At eastern part of the beach lying a small cape, which is wooded by mangroves. Here and there are stony paths, good for relaxed while waiting for the sunset at the top of Ile Ape Mountain. At western part of the beach we may find white gray sandy beach, suitable for bathing, sun bathing. It has natural beauty of underwater life, visitors can also snorkeling and diving for exploring marine life. On August local people do traditional handfishing in Lewolein beach which begin traditional ceremony. You can also relax, enjoy, local food in beach which surrounded by cocounut plantation. It is a stopping place to Bean Beach.
P. WOWON BEACH
It is located in Wowon village about 78 kilometers from Lewoleba town. It is really wonderfull white sand beach. White sand along the beach seems like fine crystal, from west to east about 4 until 5 kilometers long. On July – August, the point break waves and crach regulary matching for surfing. It has also blue colour sea water alongside the beach. Tropical trees is surrounded the beach.
Q. BEAN BEACH
It is located in Bean Village, 4 hours by car/bus/motor bike from Lewoleba town. It offers unspoiled beach and white sand beach along the beach seems like find crystal from west to east about 3 until 4 kilometers long. Close your eyes and draw up images of the clear natural blue waters and undersea aquarium. In the east part, visitor will find Tanjung Merah (red cape), for exploring the cape by boat with many kinds of bats. On July – August, the point break wave and crack regulary matching for surfing. It has blue colour of sea water side the beach is surrounded by tropical trees.
